The Undergraduate Journal of Art History & Visual Culture (UJAH) is a free print and online journal published by the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory at the University of British Columbia (AHVA). UJAH seeks two self-motivated and passionate graphic designers looking to gain experience developing all design aspects of a print publication.
Position Details
The graphic design team is an integral part of UJAH’s production and publication. Two successful candidates will gain valuable experience developing the visual concept of a print publication from scratch, while engaging in constructive feedback. They will work with UJAH’s editorial staff.
Responsibilities
- Develop the overall visual concept for Issue 15 of UJAH.
- Deliver visual concepts and mock-ups in a timely manner.
- Implement the layout and design of Issue 15 in its entirety.
- Create the journal’s promotional materials (both print and web graphics).
- Assist in any of UJAH’s additional graphic design needs.
Qualifications
Applicants must be undergraduate students at the University of British Columbia. Some experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is required. Applicants should have a somewhat flexible schedule to accommodate the journal’s production deadlines and must work well in a team. They should be able to respond quickly and well to constructive feedback. Experience in photography is an asset, though not required. Applicants should be interested in art publications, though a specialization in art history or visual arts is not required. Exceptional organizational skills and a stellar aesthetic eye are key.
We are putting emphasis on hiring diverse voices and experiences to our staff. Applicants are not required to be students of the Art History, Visual Art & Theory department. Those who identify as BIPOC or LGBTQ+ are strongly encouraged to apply.
Commitment
This is a volunteer position that runs from October 2023 to April 2024. Most of the design work will be done remotely, with the exception of two to three team meetings per term as well as design meetings with the Co-Editors-in-Chief and the AHVA department. The designers can expect to be volunteering 5-10 hours per week, depending on the time of year, with the bulk of the design phase occurring from December 2023 – March 2024.
